Uber Eats will stop making deliveries starting this Tuesday (8)

As of this Tuesday (8), Uber Eats will no longer deliver ready meals. The company had announced the decision to no longer provide delivery service for restaurant orders earlier this year.

“Our main objective going forward will be to offer access to the selection of supermarkets, specialty stores, pet shops, florists, liquor stores and other items in the app,” the company said in a statement.

Uber said the decision was made to focus efforts on partnering with Chilean startup Cornershop to deliver convenience and grocery items. Starting this Tuesday, users will be able to place grocery, pharmacy, and convenience orders through Cornershop using the Uber app.

In October 2019, Uber purchased a majority stake in Cornershop and integrated grocery ordering into the Uber Eats app.

In Brazil, Cornershop has been operating since January 2020. Currently, the service is available in the following list of cities: metropolitan regions of Aracaju, Belém, Belo Horizonte, Brasília, Campinas, Campo Grande, Cuiabá, Curitiba, Florianópolis, Fortaleza, Goiânia, João Pessoa, Jundiaí, Macaé, Maceió, Manaus, Natal, Novo Hamburgo, Piracicaba, Porto Alegre, Presidente Prudente, Recife, Ribeirão Preto, Rio de Janeiro, Salvador, Santos, São José do Rio Preto, São José dos Campos, São Paulo , Sorocaba, Taubaté, Uberlândia and Vitória.

The company says it hopes to expand the list of cities throughout 2022.

Uber reported having around 1 million drivers and delivery partners in Brazil, with 50,000 of them dedicated to Uber Eats. Motorcyclists and cyclists who used this platform were encouraged to migrate to other delivery services provided by the company, such as “Flash Moto” and “Direct”. Both do not involve ready-to-eat foods.

Among the customers, there were 25 million on the food delivery platform in Brazil. The company did not disclose the number of restaurants that were registered.

In January, Uber Eats also made the cash payment method unavailable.

“All users will be able to continue placing orders until March 7, but only through digital means such as credit and debit cards and PIX,” the company said.

Credits or promotions in the application for use in restaurants that were not used until Monday (7) were sent to the “Uber Wallet”, where they can be used in the company’s other services.

Safe

Uber Eats’ announcement came a day after the law was passed that forces app companies to hire their delivery workers for accident insurance during the work period.

Policies must not have a deductible and must cover personal accidents, permanent or temporary disability and death.

in interview to CNNlabor lawyer Miguel Marin Ruiz said that the law is “a great victory” for workers, as it also provides for the remuneration of professionals if they are unable to perform the service.

Ruiz explained that the new law provides coverage for personal injury to the worker, in cases of incapacity to perform the service or even death. The financial aid provided is calculated based on the last three months of pay, explained the lawyer.
