Uber may start accepting bitcoin

Uber may start accepting payments in bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies if there are advantages and a need for this, CEO Dara Khosrowshahi told CNBC this Thursday.

“Just as we accept all types of local currencies, we will consider cryptocurrencies and / or bitcoin as the currency for making payments. This is good for business, good for passengers and for users of the food delivery service, ”he said.

At the same time, Khosrowshahi ruled out the possibility of investing in bitcoin the company’s own assets.

“We discussed this option, but quickly dropped it. We will keep our cash reserves safe. We’re not speculating, ”he said when asked if Uber would follow the example of Tesla, which announced a $ 1.5 billion investment earlier this week.

The CEO of the fintech company Adyen, whose clients include Uber, Facebook and Netflix, Peter van der Dus, in a separate interview with CNBC, said today that there are no plans to start working with cryptocurrencies, since they are too volatile and do not generate much interest from customers.

“Bitcoin is more of an investment than a payment method,” he said.

Twitter CFO Ned Segal announced on Wednesday that they could start holding bitcoins if their employees and suppliers are willing to be paid in crypto. On the same day, General Motors Company CEO Mary Barra announced that they “continue to study” bitcoin as a means of payment for their products, while clarifying that her company was not going to place reserve assets in cryptocurrency.
