In recent weeks, 3.7 million consultations for problems directly linked to droughts and fires in Basic Health Units (UBSs) were recorded in Brazil, according to data from the Ministry of Health.
Folder monitoring showed that 31% of the public served were children between 0 and 11 years old . The age group is more sensitive to worsening air quality due to immaturity of the respiratory and immune systems.
The ministry warns that, among the elderly population, the increase in the concentration of pollutants in the air aggravates pre-existing diseases, such as asthma and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD).
Brazil records more than 200 thousand fires until this Thursday (26), according to the National Institute for Space Research (Inpe). The value is almost double that recorded in the same period last year — in the Southeast region, the number of fires is three times higher.
The recommendation is that children, the elderly and people with respiratory problems increase their fluid intake and avoid exposure to smoke.
