The UEFA Foundation for Children will donate 1 million euros to charitable initiatives focusing on Ukrainian children affected by the Russian invasion, said today (1/3) the chairman of the governing body of European football, Alexander Cheferin.
More than 660,000 people, mostly women and children, have fled Ukraine and moved to neighboring countries such as Poland and Romania since the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, according to a statement from the UN refugee agency.
Russia calls its actions in Ukraine a “special military operation.”
“Children are very vulnerable during conflicts and it is our duty to help protect their fundamental rights and health,” said Ceferin, who is also president of the foundation.
The foundation will provide an additional € 100,000 emergency package to the Moldovan Football Federation, which works with humanitarian organizations to help children and refugees who have fled Ukraine.
“We are going through unprecedented moments, with thousands of Ukrainian families seeking refuge in our country,” said Leonid Oleinishenko, president of the Moldovan Football Federation.
The emergency fund will also be used in part to provide medicines and supplies to children’s hospitals in Ukraine.
