The Federal University of Amazonas (UFAM) announced the temporary suspension of in-person academic and administrative activities due to adverse weather conditions that have affected air quality in the state of Amazonas.
The decision was made official by the institution’s rector, Sylvio Mário Puga Ferreira, this Thursday (19). At the end of August, the same measure had already been taken by the University. At the time, in-person activities were suspended for three days.
According to the statement, activities will be carried out remotely until September 21. The measure was taken as an exceptional and precautionary measure, aiming to preserve the health and well-being of the academic and administrative community of UFAM.
Despite the suspension of in-person activities, essential activities continue to operate normally, as determined by the institution.
The decision was motivated by the weather conditions that are impacting air quality in the region, mainly due to the concentration of smoke caused by fires in various parts of the state.
The phenomenon has raised alarm among health and education authorities, resulting in the adoption of preventive measures. This week, air quality in Manaus was once again classified as “terrible” in several parts of the city, according to the SELVA monitoring system.
