UFC President Dana White on Monday addressed a video released earlier in the day showing him and his wife apparently punching each other in the face in what appeared to be a fight at a club in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.
According to TMZ, which released the video, the fight took place in a VIP room during a New Year’s Eve party at El Squid Roe, shortly after midnight.
The video, which lasts about 45 seconds, shows White saying something to his wife, Anne White. When she turns to Dana White, he grabs her left wrist, after which she slaps him across the face with her right hand.
Dana appears to immediately slap Anne once and then take another swing at her. The two then embrace as others intervene.
Speaking to TMZ, Dana White admitted that he and his wife were the people in the video and that he assaulted her.
“You’ve heard me say for years, ‘There’s never an excuse for a guy to put his hands on a woman,’ and now I’m here on TMZ talking about it,” Dana White, 53, told the outlet.
He added: “There was definitely a lot of alcohol involved, but that’s no excuse. I’m literally not making excuses for this, it’s never happened before, it’s the first time it’s happened… I don’t know why it happened and my wife and I apologize to each other, we apologize to our kids.”
Several times in the interview, Dana made reference to being more concerned about the incident’s impact on their children.
“My wife and I have been married for almost 30 years,” he said. “We’ve known each other since we were 12. We’ve obviously been through some (swearing) together and have three kids. This is one of those horrible situations. I’m ashamed. But it’s also one of those situations where we’re now more worried about our kids. We have three children, and obviously, since the video came out, we’ve shown the video to the kids. We are more focused on our family now.”
Dana White helped convince brothers Lorenzo and Frank Fertitta to buy the UFC for $2 million in 2001, when White was named president of the company. The brothers sold the company in 2021 for over $4 billion. At the time, White owned almost 10% of the company and remained chairman during the sale and still holds the position today.
