UFRGS entrance exam places the book “O Avesso da Pele” as mandatory reading

The Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS) released this Thursday (28) the list of mandatory readings for the 2025 entrance exam. Among the 12 selected authors is Jeferson Tenório, with the work “O Avesso da Pele”, challenged in some states earlier this year.

The book was determined to be collected in the states of Paraná, Goiás and Mato Grosso do Sul, in addition to facing controversy in Rio Grande do Sul. The states' allegations were that the language used was “inappropriate for the age group of the majority of students from the State Education Network”, according to a note from the MS government.

In the same period, the State Department of Education of Paraná, the first to impose the removal of books, classified the distribution of the work by the Federal Government through the Ministry of Education as “regrettable”. The state of Goiás ordered the collection to analyze the book “in terms of compliance with the pedagogical proposal of the state public education network”.

The work won the Jabuti Prize for literary novel in 2021, and tells the story of a boy who, after the death of his father, murdered during a police raid, decides to research his family's past.

Through social media, the book's author said he was “moved” by the work's inclusion on the UFRGS list. “Lots of joy, guys! The book arriving where it needs to go: in the hands of students!”, wrote Tenório.

In the notice of mandatory readings for the UFRGS entrance exam for 2025, authors such as Lupicínio Rodrigues, Kaká Werá, Ruth Guimarães and Gabriel García Marquez also appear.
