UFSM Mascot Dog is “appointed” as the Dean of Canine Affairs

After Almost 10 years circulating through the campus of the Federal University of Santa Maria (UFSM) in Rio Grande do Sul, the famous community dog, Silveira, won a promotion. The university published on its social networks the appointment of the dog as a “dean of canine affairs”.

The letter of appointment of the pet was entitled to the signing of the rector of the University, Luciano Schuch.

Weighing more than 43 kg, Silveira won the hearts of netizens with their exotic poses and rolled floor.


The Instagram of the now Dean accumulates more than 70,000 followers and is used for the dissemination of NGOs. The dog’s charisma has increased the visibility of volunteers who take care of campus animals.

According to Professor Fabiana Stecca, the animal arrived very young to the scene. “He appeared smaller, and since then lives here. We estimate that he is about 10 years old and has been almost nine that he is among us,” said the teacher.

Silveira was not forgotten during the pandemic. The dog was installed in his house next to the former emergency room of the Santa Maria University Hospital. However, with the face -to -face return of the classes, the dog circulated again through the buildings.


In addition, the little animal won its own bed, bought by volunteers.

Due to advanced age, Silveira already has some health problems such as arthrosis, skin problems and digestive difficulties. Currently follows a regulated diet and cannot eat foods of humans. In addition, the dog follows under the care of the University Veterinary Hospital (HVU).

“We are using this moment of visibility to reflect: isn’t it time for him to ‘earn’? He needs a definitive, safe, affection and care that life on campus does not guarantee,” says Fabiana.

  • Help with transportation, temporary home or food;
  • Donate clothes and shoes in good condition to thrift store;
