UFSM professors killed during hotel robbery

Two professors from the Federal University of Santa Maria (UFSM) were killed in the early hours of Thursday (25) during a robbery at a hotel in the city of Mato Castelhano (RS), almost 300 kilometers from Porto Alegre.

The victims were identified as Fabiano de Oliveira Fortes and Felipe Turchetto. Both worked in the Department of Forestry Sciences at the Center for Rural Sciences at UFSM.

“Two individuals entered the hotel as guests and, at around 1:30 am, they came down and held everyone who was in the hall and restaurant hostage,” said detective Diogo Ferreira, responsible for the case.

During the action, everyone was tied with seals on their feet and hands, according to the delegate.

“They started taking the victims’ cell phones, money and jewelry and tried to make some bank transfers, but were unable to do so. At the time of the robbery, one of the victims managed to break the seal and tried to attack one of the criminals and was shot with a firearm,” said Ferreira.

According to reports, more shots were fired, resulting in the death of another man. The criminals then fled.

A CNN the owner of the Romanttei Hotel and Restaurant, Aline Roman Mattei, stated that the victims were not guests and were passing through the location.

“The bandits were a bit lost and scared. I know that the two who were killed tried to fight back and had just arrived,” said Aline.

The Federal University of Santa Maria mourned the death of the professors and declared official mourning for one day.
