This Thursday (10), Russia’s foreign minister accused his British counterpart of arrogance and refusing to listen. The statement came at a tense meeting that highlighted the gulf between them over the Ukraine crisis.
“I’m honestly disappointed that what we have is a conversation between a mute and a deaf… Our more detailed explanations fell on unprepared ground,” Sergei Lavrov told a joint press conference with Britain’s Liz Truss.
“They say Russia is waiting until the ground freezes like a stone so that their tanks can easily cross Ukrainian territory. I think the terrain was like this today with our British counterparts.”
Truss directly challenged Lavrov for his assertion that Russia is not threatening anyone by piling up troops and weapons near the borders with Ukraine.
“I see no reason to have 100,000 troops stationed on the border other than to threaten Ukraine. And if Russia is serious about diplomacy, they need to remove these troops and give up the threats,” she said.
Russia has presented the West with a series of demands to ensure security, complaining that it feels threatened by repeated waves of expansion by the Western military alliance North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and the alliance’s refusal to rule out the membership of its neighbor Ukraine. , a former Soviet republic.
“No one is undermining Russia’s security, that’s just not true,” Truss said, adding that it was “perfectly appropriate” for Ukraine to defend itself and seek alliances.
