UK at significant risk of gas shortages this winter, body says

The UK faces a “significant risk” of gas shortages this winter and a possible emergency due to conflict in Ukraine and limited supplies in Europe, the energy regulator said.

While Russia only meets about 4% of Britain’s gas needs, a disruption in supplies to Europe has contributed to rising British prices and makes it more difficult for the UK to source gas from other countries.

In a letter to energy company SSE, regulator Ofgem said the UK faces the possibility of a “gas supply emergency” in which supplies to some gas-fired power plants are reduced, which could prevent them from generating electricity. .

Responding to the publication of the letter, Ofgem said in an email: “This winter is likely to be more challenging than previous ones due to the Russian disruption of gas supplies to Europe.”

“We need to be prepared for all scenarios this winter,” Ofgem said in the email, adding that it is implementing contingency measures to ensure the UK’s power system is fully prepared.

Gas power plants accounted for over 40% of the UK’s electricity production last year, while fossil fuel is also used to heat around 80% of British homes.
