UK boy dies after court allows devices to be turned off

A boy British A 12-year-old with irreversible brain damage at the center of a legal battle over whether to continue his life support system died Saturday after a hospital stopped treatment, his family said.

Archie Battersbee’s parents have unsuccessfully appealed to Britain’s highest courts and the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) against the end of life support.

They also failed to persuade the courts to allow them to transfer Archie to a hospice medical facility to die.

Doctors who treat Archie in a hospital London they said that continuing on life support would not have been in the best interest of him, and that taking the boy to a palliative care unit could have made his situation worse.

The boy had been unconscious since he suffered an injury at the family home in Essex, east London, in April.

“I am the proudest mother in the world, such a beautiful little boy, and he fought to the end,” Archie’s mother Hollie Dance told reporters outside the hospital.
