UK: Coronavirus review this week or early next

A review of measures under Plan B to limit the spread of the pandemic in England is likely to take place this week or early next year, a senior government source said today as part of a move to divert interest from the parties. held on Downing Street during the Lockdown period.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson hopes to reshape his agenda after he came under fire for attending one of those parties in Downing Street Garden in May 2020 when current pandemic regulations banned almost all social interactions.

The prime minister has apologized for attending the party, but more and more reports of social gatherings with alcohol in his circle have sparked calls for his resignation, even from within the ruling Conservative Party.

The lifting of Plan B measures – the compulsory telework where possible, the mandatory use of the mask in public places and the use of the vaccination pass to enter certain places – will satisfy many in his party who want to return to something that will look like normalcy.

A senior government source said the review of the measures was likely to take place this week, but more likely early next year.

The measures will be in force until at least January 26, having been imposed in December to limit the spread of the Omicron variant.

Education Minister Nadim Zahawi said earlier that the number of infections and hospitalizations from the variant seemed to be “flattened”, raising hopes that some of the measures could be lifted.

“I’m convinced that when we review them on January 26, as we said we would do, then we’re in a much better position to lift some of those restrictions,” Zahawi told Sky News.

Asked about Johnson’s future, he said the prime minister “understands the level of damage in the country”.
