Britain's deputy prime minister today defended Israel's right to protect itself but called for an “immediate ceasefire” in Gaza on humanitarian grounds as tensions rise between the Middle Eastern country and its biggest backers. As Oliver Dowden said, the British government has “relentlessly” called on Israel to comply with international humanitarian law and has also raised concerns about humanitarian access to Gaza, where a humanitarian crisis is raging after six months of hostilities. “That's why we're asking for an immediate ceasefire to allow aid to come in and necessarily to get the hostages out,” Dowden told Reuters in an interview in Seoul, where he is attending a US-backed Democracy Summit.
