UK exemption for orange juice from Brazil boosts competitiveness, says association

The suspension by the United Kingdom of import tariffs for concentrated and non-concentrated orange juice from Brazil, from January 2023 until the end of 2024, should help the competitiveness of the product from Brazil, the largest global exporter of the commodity, said the association CitrusBR in a note this Wednesday (23).

According to CitrusBR calculations, when considering the average of the last three crops, savings in the period with tariff exemption will be at least US$ 5 million.

“We knew that there would be a window for the revision of a series of tariffs due to the United Kingdom’s exit from the European Union and that there was a real chance of obtaining this exemption because there is no local orange juice production…”, said the director CitrusBR executive, Ibiapaba Netto, in a note.

The British market is the third most important in Europe, behind Germany and France for juice from Brazil. The European Union is the main destination for Brazilian exports, receiving more than 60% of shipments.

According to the Executive Director of CitrusBR, the scenario is not better only due to supply restriction.

“Right now we are experiencing a period in which juice supply is very tight and we hope that this measure, which can be renewed, will reap good results over the next few years, increasing the competitiveness of Brazilian orange juice,” he said.
