In the UK, 12 people have died from the Ômicron variant of the coronavirus and 104 are in hospital with it, British Deputy Prime Minister Dominic Raab told Times Radio on Monday (20).
The British cabinet meets this Monday (20), as pressure increases on Prime Minister Boris Johnson to slow the spread of the Ômicron variant with a tightening of social restrictions before Christmas.
The UK has reported record levels of Covid-19 cases, with officials and ministers warning that the effects of the latest wave are not yet over.
Johnson’s spokesman said the prime minister would chair a meeting of his cabinet at 11 am EDT to discuss the Covid-19 situation.
“At this point, we are still monitoring the data and keeping a close eye on it,” the spokesperson said when asked about the possibility of new restrictions. “We will update the audience if there is any other necessary action at the earliest possible opportunity.”
Any decision to limit how people can celebrate Christmas could come at a high political cost to Johnson, whose authority was undermined by questions about whether he and his team violated lockdown rules last year.
Johnson also suffered a major uprising in parliament last week, when lawmakers from his own Conservative Party strongly resisted tightening of the pandemic rules.
