FAAP professor of International Relations Carlos Gustavo Poggio said in an interview with CNN this Thursday (7) that the “United Kingdom has been experiencing political and economic turmoil since Brexit” – the country’s departure from the European Union, endorsed in 2016.
For Poggio, the country’s instability added to the personal scandals of Prime Minister Boris Johnson help explain his resignation from office this Thursday. The trigger came after the departure of more than 50 members of the British government.
The professor recalled that Johnson is the third Prime Minister of the Conservative Party to resign. “Conservative leaders are now making a political calculation because they understand that the party is being harmed. With that, they target the upcoming elections,” he said.
However, Poggio stressed that “one of the advantages of parliamentarism is to better accommodate moments of crisis. Changes within this system are normal, as the mandate belongs to the party and not to the prime minister”.
The prime minister’s popularity may also have influenced his decision, according to Poggio. “During the pandemic, Boris Johnson’s approval rating reached around 60%. Today, it is below 30%. If Johnson were a more popular politician, the outcome could be different,” he concluded.
