UK: Johnson’s successor on September 5 – The timeline of the process

Boris Johnson is stepping down as Britain’s prime minister, forcing the ruling Conservative Party to choose a new leader to be announced on September 5.

Conservative MPs are controlling the process of choosing two leadership candidates. The party’s membership, some 200,000 people, will then choose the winner by postal vote.

The winner will ‘inherit’ a parliamentary majority and become the country’s next prime minister.

The number of potential successors has already been reduced from 11 to 3.
