UK: Manufacturing output falls 1% mom in April vs. 0.2% expected

UK industrial sector recovery remained stagnant in Aprilthe latest UK manufacturing and industrial production data released by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) showed on Monday.

Manufacturing production came in at -1.0% MoM in April vs. 0.2% expected and -0.2% registered in March, while total industrial production came in at -0.6% vs. 0.2% expected and -0.2% prior.

In annual terms, UK manufacturing output stood at 0.5% in April, below expectations of 1.8%. Total industrial production increased 0.7% in the fourth month of the year, against 0.5% expected and 0.7% previously.

Separately, UK Goods Trade Balance figures were released, coming in at £20.893m in April, against £22.5bn expected and £23.897m previously. The total trade balance (non-community) stood at 10,988 million pounds in April, compared to 13,804 million previously.

The data published by National Statistics is an estimate of the total manufacturing production in the United Kingdom. Manufacturing production is significant as a short-term indicator of the strength of the manufacturing sector. A higher than anticipated reading is bullish for the pound, while a lower reading is bearish.
