UK: New package of sanctions against Moscow – Russian officials targeted

Britain announced today that it had imposed sanctions on Kremlin-appointed officials in eastern Ukraine’s Luhansk and Donetsk provinces as well as 29 regional governors across Russia in response to Moscow’s invasion of the former Soviet republic.

The 42 new additions to British sanctions also include Russia’s minister and deputy justice minister as well as two nephews of Russian billionaire Alisher Usmanov, who was also sanctioned by London in March.

“We will continue to impose tough sanctions on those who seek to legitimize Putin’s illegal invasion until Ukraine prevails,” Foreign Secretary Liz Truss, considered the favorite to succeed Boris Johnson as prime minister, said in a statement.

Vitaly Khochenko and Vladislav Kuznetsov, appointed by Russia to the posts of prime minister and first vice president in the so-called Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics, are now subject to travel restrictions while their assets are ‘frozen’, the British Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

“Khochenko and Kuznetsov were sent to implement Russia’s policies throughout the invaded region, supporting Putin’s plans to illegally annex most of Ukraine and use fake referendums to falsely legitimize their occupation,” the statement said.

Russian regional governors were sanctioned for facilitating the Russian occupation and attempting to wrest territory from Ukraine by funneling funds to Donetsk and Luhansk, according to the British Foreign Office.

Johnson has sought to take the lead in Western sanctions against Russia following its February 24 invasion of Ukraine, which Moscow describes as a “special military operation”.

Britain has so far imposed sanctions on more than 1,100 individuals and more than 100 entities in Russia, targeting among others well-known businessmen and companies as well as prominent politicians.

The British government said it is also targeting two Syrian organizations in coordination with the European Union, one of which London says is responsible for recruiting Syrians to fight in Ukraine and the other supports the “oppressive Syrian regime”.
