The global IT outage that affected media companies, banks and telecoms firms around the world on Friday (19) is not being treated as a malicious act, a UK government security source told Reuters.
The source, speaking on condition of anonymity, said security experts were not treating the matter as a cybersecurity issue.
For now, IT experts are treating the global crisis as possibly related to corporate antivirus software from CrowdStrike, a company focused on government clients and large corporations.
“It appears that this has affected Windows machines with this software installed, causing them to crash (blue screen error) and get stuck in boot loops,” said Professor Salil Kanhere of the University of New South Wales in Sydney.
“An update to its software appears to have been released globally without proper testing,” Kanhere said.
