UK says Russia plans strategic nuclear exercise soon

Russia plans to start a strategic nuclear exercise soon, UK Defense Secretary Ben Wallace said on Thursday.

The secretary warned that the Kremlin’s actions are heading in the wrong direction, despite efforts to find a diplomatic solution.

Wallace said Britain had access to intelligence information that Russia was engaging in plans for so-called “false flag” operations as a pretext to invade Ukraine, as well as carrying out cyber attacks and other destabilizing activities.

“Despite the conversation, the direction of travel is on the wrong track,” Wallace told BBC radio. “The Russians are still increasing their battalion tactical groups. […] They are planning to start a strategic nuclear exercise soon and indeed we see more activity elsewhere.”

The secretary also said the UK could send more troops to help its allies in eastern and southern Europe if needed. He added that, at the moment, he considers progress in the attempt to resolve the Ukrainian crisis “slow”.
