On Monday, a top Ukrainian official reiterated that Russia was continuing to build up forces in eastern Ukraine.
Vadym Denysenko, adviser to the interior minister, said in comments on national television: “From my point of view, this major offensive (in eastern Ukraine) has already begun.”
Amid the Russian advance, nine humanitarian corridors to evacuate people from Ukraine’s besieged eastern regions were agreed for Monday between Kiev and Moscow, including five in the Luhansk region, Ukraine’s Deputy Prime Minister Iryna Vereshchuk said.
According to European officials, the Russian offensive in eastern Ukraine is part of a strategy to try to achieve some sort of victory in the war by May 9. On this date, the country commemorates the Day of Victory over Germany in World War II.
