the bank of England (BoE) and the HM Treasury will launch a public consultation in 2022 to assess the possible launch of a digital currency issued by the central bank (CBDC, its acronym in English), informed the two bodies in a joint statement on Tuesday (9).
According to the note, there is still no final decision on the development of the instrument, but the closest deadline for an eventual issuance of CBDC in the United Kingdom it would be in the second half of the current decade – that is, from 2025 onwards.
The authorities explain that the consultation will help the project’s development phase, which should last a few years, and will be followed by technical studies, to decide the conceptual architecture of the boundary.
“The plan to publish a consultation next year on the CBDC is a crucial step in our policy development, especially as we move forward in our thinking on the pressing issues,” said BoE Vice President for Financial Stability, Jon Cunliffe .
