The British government will make 3,000 Eurovision tickets available to Ukrainian refugees after their country was unable to host the competition because of the invasion of Russia last year.
The government also said it would provide $12 million in funds to help organize Eurovision in May on behalf of Ukraine, which won the competition in 2022 and would be the next host.
“This announcement means that thousands of tickets will be given away to people displaced by war, so they can be part of a concert honoring their homeland, their culture and their music,” said UK Culture Secretary Lucy Frazer.
“As always, we stand together with the Ukrainian people in their fight for freedom.”
The city of Liverpool, in the north of England, will host Eurovision 2023. The United Kingdom was runner-up last year.
British broadcaster BBC will organize the event, which normally attracts a television audience of nearly 200 million and was last held in the UK in 1998. Ukraine automatically qualified for the competition’s grand final.
