UK wants to expand investigation into Microsoft and Activision deal

The UK antitrust agency said on Thursday it would launch an in-depth investigation into Microsoft’s $69 billion purchase of Activision Blizzard, maker of “Call of Duty”, after the tech giant failed to offer solutions. to alleviate fears about competition.

The deal, announced in January, requires approval in the United States as well as other major jurisdictions, including the European Union and China.

The British regulator said earlier this month that the acquisition of the video game developer could hurt competition in game consoles, subscription services and cloud games if Microsoft refuses to give competitors access to Activision’s best-selling games.

Reuters previously reported that Microsoft will pay a $3 billion fine if the deal fails, according to a person familiar with the matter, suggesting the company is confident of getting antitrust approval.
