Russian bombings of a Ukrainian base near the Polish border are deeply worrying but will not stop Britain from continuing to supply Ukraine with defensive weapons, Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s spokesman said on Monday.
“These attacks are deeply concerning,” Johnson’s spokesman said.
Asked if they would stop the UK from sending more weapons, he said: “No. We will continue to provide this defensive and lethal capability to the Ukrainian government. It’s vital that we do, we know it’s been helpful, we know that. It was successfully deployed.”
The target of the attack is about 25 kilometers away from the border with Polandwhich reinforces the tension between NATO, a group of which Poland is a part, and Russia.
Ukraine’s allies, including the United Kingdom, Germany and the United States, are urgently sending thousands of anti-tank and anti-aircraft missiles to Kiev in response to Moscow’s aggression
The Russian Defense Ministry said the attack destroyed “foreign mercenaries and a large amount of foreign weapons”.
On Saturday (21), before the attack, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said that Russia “warned the US that the delivery of weapons they are organizing from various countries is not just a move dangerous, it is an act that makes the respective convoys into legitimate targets”, warned Sergei Riabkov in an interview this Saturday with the TV channel Pervy Kanal.
Sergei Riabkov also claimed that the “security guarantees” requested by Russia from the West, including the guarantee that Ukraine would never join NATO, were no longer valid.
“The situation has completely changed. The question now is to put into practice the goals of our leaders,” he said, referring to the “demilitarization” of Ukraine called for by the Kremlin.
“If the Americans are willing, of course we can resume the dialogue,” he added, specifying that Moscow was ready, in particular, with regard to the START agreements to limit nuclear arsenals. “It all depends on Washington,” he said.
On the other hand, the bombed Ukrainian base is just a few kilometers from the NATO border. If the explosions hit Polish territory, Article 5 of the treaty is clear: “An attack against one member state is an attack against all member states”.
