UK: Woman jailed for life for murdering her friend to steal her property

In Life imprisonment an Australian woman was sentenced today for the brutal murder of her friend, with the court’s verdict broadcast live on television, an extremely rare event for British justice.

Gemma Mitchell, 38, was convicted guilty of the June 2021 murder of 67-year-old Deborah Chong. Two weeks after the murder, Mitchell drove 200 miles from London to southwest England and dumped the decapitated body in the woods.

The court today sentenced her to life imprisonment with the right to suspend the sentence after 34 years.

According to the indictment, Mitchell developed a friendly relationship with Chong after becoming a member of the same parish as her. He killed her because she refused to give her £200,000 to renovate her dilapidated house. He then wrote a forged will to inherit Chong’s fortune of around £700,000.

When Chong disappeared, Mitchell initially said she had gone to visit her family “somewhere near the sea”. In fact, she had beheaded her and hid the body in her garden.

Judge Richard Marks noted that Gemma Mitchell expressed no remorse for this “deeply shocking” crime. She was completely speechless when the verdict was announced, while the victim’s family watched via video link from Malaysia.

Is only the second time a British criminal court trial has been allowed to be broadcast live.
