Ukraine, 11, travels alone to escape the war

If he had kept his son by his side in Ukraine, he would have exposed him to the risk of bombing, he would have endangered his life. Mom Yulia made the hardest decision: she sent her 11-year-old child, alone, as far as Slovakia, in Bratislava, where their relatives live. The little one, in the middle of the war, left from Zaporizhzhia, in southeastern Ukraine (the site of the largest nuclear power plant in Ukraine, which was attacked by Russian forces last week) and, by train, he has traveled alone a thousand kilometers, all the way to Slovakia. He only had a backpack, a note from his mother, a phone number written on his hand and a passport.

When he reached his destination, he was greeted with admiration by the Slovak authorities. In a statement on Facebook, the Slovakian Interior Ministry said that the child has won over officials “with his smile, fearlessness and determination, worthy of a true hero ». And again: «It all came just because his mother had to stay in Ukraine. Volunteers took care of himthey took him to a warm place and gave him to eat and drink ».

The mother, moved, in a video thanked those who welcomed and protected her child. «I am a mother of several children and I’m a widow. I want to thank the Slovak border guards and the volunteers in Slovakia who took care of my son, ”she says.

And again: «They helped him to cross the border alone. I am grateful to you for saving my son. There is a nuclear power plant next to my city against which the Russians are shooting. He is on fire. I can’t leave my mother because she can’t move and so I sent him alone on the train to the border. And there she met many people with a big heart. You are a small country but your people have big hearts. Please save our children and give him shelter ».
