Ukraine: 14,200 Russian soldiers have been killed since the start of the war

Ukraine’s armed forces say about 14,200 Russian soldiers have been killed since Russia began its invasion more than three weeks ago. He added that 450 Russian tanks and nearly 1,450 other armored vehicles had been destroyed, along with 93 Russian aircraft and 112 helicopters.

In addition, 205 Russian artillery systems were destroyed, along with 72 multi-launcher systems and 43 anti-aircraft weapons systems, he said.

CNN could not confirm these allegations. Information from Russia is rarely available and officials rarely report its losses. The latest figure appears to have been released on March 2, when Russia said 498 of its soldiers had died since the start of the campaign.

What we know

US estimates of Russian casualties range from 3,000 to 10,000, according to US and NATO officials who spoke to CNN. Estimates of US and allied intelligence services vary widely as to how many Russian forces have been killed to date, intelligence sources told CNN. But even the lowest estimates are thousands.

Ukraine says it is still waiting to hear a request from Russian authorities to repatriate the bodies of the dead.

The Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine said that the issue of collecting and identifying the bodies was discussed at a meeting between Prime Minister Dennis Smihal and the chairman of the International Committee of the Red Cross, Peter Maurer, on Thursday.
