Ukraine: About 800 civilians are hiding at the Nitrogen chemical plant in Sheverodonetsk

About 800 civilians have taken refuge in a chemical plant in Sheverodonetsk, in eastern Ukraine, where fighting between Russian and Ukrainian forces has been raging for days, US’s lawyer Dmitry Firta, the owner of the company, said today.

“About 800 people have taken refuge in the basement of the Nitrogen Chemical Plant, owned by the DF Group of Dmitro Firtas,” said lawyer Lainy Davis in a statement. “Among the 800 are about 200 of the 3,000 workers at the plant and about 600 residents of Severodonetsk,” he added.

The Ukrainian presidency, contacted by Agence France-Presse, has not yet confirmed this information.

According to the announcement posted on the group’s website, the 200 workers remain at the plant “to ensure the protection of the chemicals” that exist there and could explode.

The Nitrogen plant is located in Sheverodonetsk, a key city in the Luhansk region, which Russian forces have been trying to seize for weeks. This morning Moscow claimed that it has “completely liberated” the residential districts of the city, while last night Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky assured that the Ukrainian fighters “hold their positions”.

Dmitry Firtas, 57, is one of the richest men in Ukraine and a close ally of former pro-Russian President Viktor Yanukovych. In June 2021, Zelensky imposed sanctions on him, such as freezing his assets and revoking the licenses of his companies, after accusing him of selling titanium-based products to Russian defense industries. However, Firtas denounced the Russian invasion in February and helped launch a television channel with a steady stream of news, in collaboration with the Ukrainian presidency and other channel owners.

“This war is completely unnecessary and can in no way be justified. This humanitarian tragedy is unbearable,” he said in a statement.
