Ukraine accuses Russia of executing prisoners injured in Avdiivka

Ukrainian authorities said on Sunday that they had opened an investigation into shots fired by Russian forces against six unarmed Ukrainian soldiers in the city of Avdiivka, and two in a village in the same region, after Russia claimed full control of the city.

“An investigation has been launched into the shooting of unarmed Ukrainian prisoners of war in Avdiivka and Vesele,” the prosecutor's office in the Donetsk region said on its Telegram channel.

Prosecutors referred to information about “the execution of six prisoners” at a position in Avdiivka, adding that they were “severely injured and awaiting evacuation”. He stated that the information was shared on Telegram, but did not reveal the source.

Ukrainian public broadcaster Suspilne quoted Ukrainian military spokesman Dmytro Lykhoviy as saying there was “no possibility yet to confirm or refute” the killings in Avdiivka as an investigation was ongoing. However, he added that it would not be the first time Russia had committed war crimes.

The Donetsk prosecutor's office said a fragment of video taken by a drone showed a Russian soldier shooting at close range at two captured Ukrainian soldiers in the village of Vesele.

“Unwilling to leave the prisoners alive, the occupant kills them with automatic weapons,” the office added, without saying when the incident occurred.]
