Ukraine allows sailors to leave on potential boost to grain exports

Sailors from merchant vessels will be able to leave the Ukraine if they receive approval from the local military administrative body, the Ukrainian prime minister said on Saturday (27), in a move that could ease the boarding process of grains of the country’s ports.

Ukrainian men aged between 18 and 60 have been largely barred from leaving the country as Ukraine fights the invasion by Russia . Women of all ages are free to leave Ukraine during war .

The country’s prime minister, Denys Shmyhal, said the decision was approved by the cabinet on Saturday. The change will cover male crew members of sea and river vessels, as well as students who need to undertake practical training on board ships, he said.

The decision should alleviate the shortage of able and willing seamen to be part of the crew of ships entering and leaving Ukraine for export of grains through an internationally brokered corridor.
