Ukraine allows sailors to leave the country

Merchant ship sailors will be allowed to leave Ukraine if they receive approval from the local military governing body, Ukraine’s prime minister said today, a move that could ease the process of moving grain from the country’s ports.

Prime Minister Dennis Schmihal said the decision was approved by the cabinet. The change will cover male crew members on ships as well as students who have to do internships on ships, he added.

The decision is likely to ease a shortage of seafarers able and willing to man ships entering and leaving Ukraine to export grain through an internationally brokered corridor.

Ukrainian men aged 18-60 have been largely banned from leaving Ukraine under a state of martial law imposed as the country battles the Russian invasion. Women of all ages were free to leave throughout the war.
