Two months of war in Ukraine. Sixty days in which they arrived in Italy alone at least 1,764 children and adolescents fleeing the conflict. This is confirmed by the data from the Ministry of the Interior as of 13 April last. A huge number if for a moment we stop to think that each of these boys and girls has a face, a name, a story that makes them unique. And that the war has chosen to stop.
A large part of these children today is in Sicily, a region of welcome in our country. 110 unaccompanied Ukrainian minors arrived in the Etna area, 1 in 16 of all children and adolescents. Here, the Catania Juvenile Court has signed a memorandum of understanding with Save The Children for the support and protection of unaccompanied foreign minors, for those fleeing from war and in conditions of vulnerability. The first of its kind.
“The collaboration with Save the Children, which represents an absolute precedent in the protection of unaccompanied foreign minors, especially those coming from the war zones of Ukraine, strengthens the action of the Juvenile Court to protect minors in conditions of hardship and will make it possible to prepare increasingly effective forms of protection that meet the needs of those in difficulty ”, he explains the President of the Juvenile Court, Roberto Di Bella.
The agreement will last two years and provides for thesocio-legal orientation and assistance to people in difficulty, with particular attention to unaccompanied foreign minors and those at risk of exploitation, abuse and social exclusion. The Court will also be supported, upon request, in cultural mediation through the Helpline service multilingual, free, by Save the Children and an online service will be guaranteed with a dedicated email, through which requests for assistance and help can be collected.
“The fight against educational poverty and the phenomenon of early school leaving, with the help of Save the Children’s operational structures and professionals in the districts at risk of the city, it will become more incisive. Another important element has been added. The synergy between the public sector and the qualified private social sector is the winning strategy “.
