Ukraine and Syria: the war has only one face. The photos

War has only one face. If you look at the images taken by photographers who have been documenting the war in Ukraine since February 24th, it is clear. There are civilians forced to leave their country without taking almost anything with them, there are buildings destroyed by bombing, there are innocent victims, mothers hugging their children, the elderly in the rubble. The same ones we have seen (and continue and see) in Syria.

There are many (at least 50, Acled data, Armed conflict location & event data project) the ongoing conflicts in the world and a large part are forgotten conflicts. Like the one in Yemen, now in its seventh year, that in Syria, now in its eleventh year, in Ethiopia, Mali, Somalia, Nigeria, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Darfur, Colombia, between Israel and Palestine.

A photo dated March 11, 2022 (top) shows Ukrainian civilians arriving in Przemysl in Poland following Russia’s attacks on Ukraine, and a photo dated September 19, 2014 shows the arrival of Syrian families who have had to leave their homes due to of the clashes in the Ayn at the Arab Region, in the Suruc district of Sanliurfa.Anadolu Agency

Every conflict, wherever it is located, destroys the human capital of each country involved. It forces men, women and children to leave their land in search of safety, to start from scratch without having chosen it. Because war doesn’t make sense. “We hope and pray that this war, shameful for all of us, for all humanity, ends as soon as possible: it is unacceptable”he said Pope francesco in the hearing with the Italian Transceivers Federation talking about the conflict in Ukraine. “Each day adds more deaths and destruction.”

The dark eyes of the people photographed in wars, the frightened faces of children, the courage of mothers and fathers tell of it.
