Ukraine announces peace talks in Saudi Arabia

Saudi Arabia will host peace talks in Ukraine, announced this Sunday (30) Andriy Yermak, chief of staff to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

“We are preparing the next meeting of advisers to the leaders of states on the implementation of the Formula for Peace of the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky, which will take place, soon, in Saudi Arabia”, said Yermak.

The talks will involve Ukraine, western nations and major developing countries, including India and Brazil, but Russia will not participate, according to The Wall Street Journal.

A CNN contacted the Itamaraty, which has not yet responded about the invitation for Brazil to participate in the meeting.

Although Yermak did not provide specific dates for the summit, the meeting is expected to take place in the city of Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, from August 5th to 6th, according to the WSJ.

Yermak added that “each point of the Formula for Peace is being discussed in an individual and group format with representatives from more than 50 countries around the world almost weekly”, referring to Zelensky’s 10-point plan, presented to world leaders at the Summit of the Group of 20 in Bali, Indonesia, last year.

Steps include a path to nuclear security, food security, a special court to try possible Russian war crimes and a final peace treaty with Moscow.

Yermak said the aim of the talks was “to unite the world around Ukraine”.

“The evidence of this objective is obvious: we involved the countries of the West, the East, the North and the South”, he added.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Saturday that Moscow had never rejected peace talks with Ukraine. To start the process of ending the war, an agreement on both sides is needed, but it is difficult to reach one while the Ukrainian army is on the attack, the Russian leader said.

Although Zelensky repeatedly said in the first months of the Russian invasion that he wanted to meet Putin face-to-face, he has ruled out any peace talks with Russia until Moscow’s troops withdraw from Ukrainian territory.

Zelensky said allowing any talks while another nation’s military is occupying Ukraine would only “freeze” the war and the pain and suffering caused by Putin’s invasion.
