Ukraine announces seven humanitarian corridors open this Sunday (20)

Ukraine’s Deputy Prime Minister Iryna Vereshchuk said that seven humanitarian corridors will open this Sunday (20) to allow civilians to leave frontline areas.

Ukraine has evacuated a total of 190,000 people from these areas since the Russian invasion began on Feb. 24, Vereshchuk said Saturday, although Ukraine and Russia blame each other for hampering the process.

On Saturday, at least 6,623 people passed through humanitarian corridors in besieged cities, according to a senior official in the office of Volodymyr Zelensky, the country’s president.

The number of Ukrainian refugees from the ongoing war continues with increasing numbers. In the latest update, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) at the United Nations said that more than three million people had fled Ukraine since the start of the war.

According to data from the United Nations agency for children, Unicef, around 1.5 million children are included in this estimate. The entity also warned of the risk of child trafficking in view of the large contingent.

“The war in Ukraine is leading to mass displacement and refugee flows – conditions that could lead to a significant increase in human trafficking and an acute child protection crisis,” said Afshan Khan, UNICEF Regional Director for Europe and Central Asia.
