Ukraine: At least five people were killed by Russian shelling in Kharkiv

At least five people were killed and seven wounded today in Russian shelling that targeted the center of Kharkiv (northeast), Ukraine’s second-largest city, the mayor and regional governor said.

“Russian occupation forces shelled districts of central Kharkiv. There is damage,” regional governor Oleh Sinegubov said on Telegram, citing an initial toll of four dead and four wounded and urging residents to seek shelter.

The mayor of Kharkiv, Ihor Terekhov, later spoke on Telegram about five dead and seven injured.

Ukraine’s second largest city with almost 1.4 million inhabitants before the war, Kharkiv is often bombarded by Russian forces who, however, never managed to capture it.

Since the war began, hundreds of civilians have been killed in the Kharkiv region, which borders Russia, according to the authorities’ count.

The bombing comes as Ukrainian forces announced yesterday, Monday, that they had launched a counter-offensive in the southern part of the country to retake the Kherson region, which has been seized by the Russian army.
