Ukraine attack on Russian-controlled city leaves 50 injured, official says

The Russian Defense Ministry accused, this Friday (7), Ukrainian forces of firing five ATACMS missiles supplied by the United States against the city of Luhansk, in eastern Ukraine, controlled by the Russians.

Local authorities say the attack injured about 20 people, including children.

The region’s Ministry of Health later said in a statement that the number of injured had grown to 50, including 4 children.

The Russian Defense Ministry said in a statement that air defense systems shot down four of the five missiles, but that one of the missiles damaged two residential apartment blocks.

The agency claimed that the destruction in the territory was deliberate.

Leonid Pasechnik, the Russian-inaugurated governor of the region, said 33 buildings were damaged, including two schools and three kindergartens. The politician said rescue teams continue to pull people from the rubble.

A witness named Lyudmila said she ran into the hallway with her son after she heard the explosions.

“Our balcony was ripped off, all the windows fell out, even the furniture, the freezer and the washing machine were gone. Our door got stuck. I thank the rescuer who took her down, we were in the hallway and couldn’t get out. If there had been a fire, we would have burned there.”, she reports.
