Researchers arrested a Ukrainian security official on suspicion of spying for Russia, authorities said today, as part of Kiev’s efforts to identify and expose spies in time of war with Russia.
The officer – lieutenant colonel within its Security Service Ukrainian (SBU) – had revealed the location of military checkpoints and other “secret information”, the State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) said.
He allegedly sent data to Russian operators via email and a messaging app. An investigation turned up cellphones, Russian SIM cards, cash and other evidence demonstrating “longstanding ties” to Russian state and law enforcement structures, the SBI added.
“Today the service works as a single team and is doing its utmost for the victory of UkraineSBU head Vasyl Maliuk said in a separate statement.
“And self-purging our ranks of traitors is an important part of that process“, he added.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky fired the former head of the SBU, a childhood friend, last July, citing cooperation with Russia from officials within that powerful agency.
The search for spies and saboteurs anywhere from the newly liberated territories to Russian-linked churches across Ukraine, it is a key part of Ukraine’s defense against Moscow’s invasion.
