Ukraine authorizes sending French military instructors to training centers

Ukraine's top commander said on Monday he had signed documents allowing French military instructors to visit Ukrainian training centers soon.

“I am pleased to welcome France's initiative to send instructors to Ukraine to train Ukrainian military personnel,” said Oleksandr Syrskyi on the Telegram messaging app, after video conversations with French Defense Minister Sebastien Lecornu.

“I have already signed the documents that will allow the first French instructors to soon visit our training centers and familiarize themselves with their infrastructure and staff”, he added.

Syrskyi did not give further details on the matter, but highlighted his belief that France's action would encourage other allies to join this “ambitious project”.

French President Emmanuel Macron started the discussion on sending troops to Ukraine and, at a conference in Paris on February 26, he suggested that Western troops could help train Ukrainians in Ukraine.

In a statement to Reuters, the French Ministry of Defense stated: “As has been mentioned several times, training on Ukrainian soil is one of the projects discussed since the conference on support for Ukraine convened by the President of the Republic on February 26.”

“Like all projects discussed at the time, this route continues to be the subject of work with the Ukrainians, in particular to understand their exact needs”, he concluded.
