Russia’s pro-Russian “Democratic Republics” of Donetsk and Luhansk in eastern Ukraine announced today that they have blocked access to Facebook and Instagram, in line with Russian policy on US-based social networking platforms.
Moscow recognized the two regions as independent on February 21 and three days later launched an attack on Ukraine, the “special military operation” it calls, partly to protect Russian-speaking residents.
“Access to information sources of the American company Meta, which allows incitement to violence against Russian-speaking users on social networking sites, has already been blocked,” the Donetsk Information Ministry said in a statement. As he clarified, this means that access to Facebook and Instagram has been blocked in the territory of “Democracy”.
In a separate statement, the Luhansk Information Ministry said it had also blocked access to the networks.
Meta Platforms did not respond to a request for comment.
Russia banned Facebook and Instagram in March after a court found Meta guilty of “extremist activity.” Russian regulators have blocked access to Instagram after Meta said it would allow users of the platform in Ukraine to post messages such as “Death to Russian invaders.” Meta clarified that the temporary change in its policy of hate speech only applies to Ukraine.
