Ukraine, Banksy and the others: art becomes a tool to help the population

Two soldiers who, instead of fighting and shooting, paint the symbol of peace and nuclear disarmament on the wall. Banksy’s work is called “CND Soldiers” sold for 97 thousand euros. Made in 2005, it was auctioned by MyArtBroker.com from an anonymous benefactor: the initial starting price was 24 thousand euros, then it was more than quadrupled because it sparked a “whirlwind of expressions of interest”, as the auctioneer explained.

All proceeds from the sale will be donated to the Okhmatdyt Children’s Hospital in Kievthe largest children’s hospital in Ukraine, which takes care of seriously ill children and anyone who was injured in the war triggered by the Russian invasion. According to Charlotte Stewart, of MyArtBroker.com, that money “will make a huge difference in the lives of people, children and their families in the coming weeks.”

Art is becoming one of the tools to collect aid for the Ukrainian people and to show solidarity. The performative artist Marina AbramovićSerbian by birth and American by adoption, on April 16, at the Sean Kelly Gallery in New York, she will reproduce her most famous performance, The Artist is in Present, to help Ukrainian civilians who remained in the country with medical assistance and by sending medicines. The starting price for sitting in front of her is 16 thousand dollars and there are only two seats available.

At the Maxxi in Romethe exhibition can be visited until 3 April Ukraine: Short Stories. Contemporary artists from Ukrainea survey – curated by Solomia Savchuk – on the contemporary Ukrainian art scene through works by Ukrainian artists and artists, young and emerging and established authors, already present in the most important international museums and galleries. A collection takes into account the Ukrainian artistic-cultural complexity, offering a current insight into it. Admission costs 5 euros: the proceeds will be donated to the fund for the humanitarian emergency in Ukraine made up of UNHCR, UNICEF and the Italian Red Cross.
