A Russian-installed official in Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia region said on Friday that Ukrainian forces had shelled the Russian-controlled port city of Berdyansk on the Sea of Azov and that several people had been wounded.
“Information about the deaths is being clarified,” said Vladimir Rogov on the Telegram messaging app. He was quoted as saying by the Tass news agency that British “Storm Shadow” missiles were used in the attack.
Zaporizhzhia is one of five Ukrainian regions, including the Crimean peninsula, that Russia claims to have annexed.
In Russia
Several Russian governors reported attacks in their regions on Friday, as the war spread from Ukraine’s borders into Russian territory.
Two drones attacked fuel and power facilities in Smolensk in western Russia early on Friday, the region’s acting governor said.
Smolensk Oblast Governor Vasily Anokhin wrote in Telegram that no casualties or “critical damage” were reported. The two long-range drones struck around 3:00 am (local time) on the villages of Peresna and Divasy, according to Anokhin.
Local authorities in several Russian regions bordering Ukraine reported bombings, including in Bryansk, where Governor Aleksandr Bogomaz directly blamed the Ukrainian Armed Forces (AFU).
“The AFU bombed the village of Novaya Pogoshch, Suzemsky district. There were no casualties. A two-family house caught fire because of the bombing. Operational services are working on site,” he said.
Belgorod Evacuations
The border region near Belgorod has seen continuous shelling, allegedly by Ukrainian forces, according to its governor.
Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov said 2,500 people had been moved to temporary accommodation to protect themselves from the fire.
“Of course the conditions are not easy. It’s not easy because they are huge sports facilities where there are hundreds of beds where adults and children, old people and young people sleep”, wrote Gladkov in Telegram.
On Thursday (1st), Gladkov said in Telegram that the region had suffered dozens of strikes in the previous day, with damage to roads, properties and vehicles. Most of the attacks were artillery and mortar attacks, with reports of people being injured but no one killed, he said at the time.
Belgorod has seen violence rise in recent days following an incursion by dissident Russian fighters last week. Ukrainian officials denied direct involvement, saying the fighters were acting independently.
On Thursday, anti-Putin Russian citizens claimed they were fighting again inside Russian territory, which Moscow’s military denied.
