Ukraine buys munitions with cryptocurrencies donated for war

Ukraine has already spent $ 15 million on donations to cryptocurrencies for military supplies, including bulletproof vests delivered on Friday, according to Alex Borniakov, Ukraine’s Deputy Minister for Digital Transformation.

The Ukrainian government expects to double the $ 50 million in cryptocurrencies donated so far in the next two or three days, he said. Most of the donations have been made to Bitcoin and Ether.

The ministry was able to find suppliers in Europe and the United States for munitions, from bulletproof vests to portions of food, bandages and night-vision equipment to the military within two days of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on February 24, Borniakov said. About 40% of suppliers are willing to accept cryptocurrencies. The rest are usually paid in cryptocurrencies converted into euros and dollars, he said.

While many cryptocurrency startup companies and founders have donated money, “most donations come from humans,” Borniakov said, noting that air raid sirens occasionally force him to run to a bomb shelter.
