The Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has approved a decision criticizing Russia for invading Ukraine and calling for Ukrainian control of all Ukrainian nuclear facilities. Only two negative votes were recorded during the vote, according to diplomatic sources.
The Council states in the text of the decision that it “condemns the actions of the Russian Federation against Ukraine”.
Twenty-six countries voted in favor of the Russian indictment, two voted against and five abstained, according to two diplomatic sources.
Negative votes belong to Russia and China. Pakistan, India, South Africa, Senegal and Vietnam abstained. Mexico and Burundi abstained.
In Lviv, Ukraine’s energy ministry called on the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to seek NATO assistance in blocking airspace over Ukraine’s nuclear facilities to prevent “nuclear terrorism” by Russia.
Ukraine has 15 nuclear reactors and Russian forces have already occupied the damaged Chernobyl nuclear power plant.
“We urge you to take urgent and decisive action,” the Ukrainian Energy Ministry said in a statement.
