Ukraine has submitted a request to Turkey to stop and seize the Russian-flagged cargo ship Zhibek Zholy, which is carrying Ukrainian wheat that was stolen from the Russian-held Ukrainian port of Berdyansk, according to a Ukrainian official and a document seen by Reuters agency.
The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry official, citing information from the country’s maritime authorities, said the Zhibek Zholy had already loaded the first cargo of 4,500 tons of wheat from Berdyansk, which he said belonged to Ukraine.
In a letter dated June 30 to Turkey’s Ministry of Justice, Ukraine’s attorney general’s office says the Zhibek Zholy is involved in “illegal export of Ukrainian wheat” from Berdyansk and bound for Karasu, Turkey, with 7,000 tonnes of cargo, a quantity greater than those mentioned by the official of the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Turkey’s Foreign Ministry did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the ship’s arrival at a Turkish port.
Kazakhstan-based KTZ Express confirmed to Reuters that the Zhibek Zholy is owned by it and chartered by Russian company Green Line, which is not subject to any sanctions regime.
KTZ Express added that it is in consultation with all parties involved and will comply with all international sanctions and restrictions.
