Ukraine can and should host next Eurovision music festival, says Boris Johnson

Ukraine can and should host the Eurovision Song Contest 2023 British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said on Saturday, after organizers said they were in talks to keep him in Britain due to the war.

While decades-old tradition dictates that the winner of the festival hosts it the following year, organizers said the security guarantees needed to hold the competition in Ukraine meant discussions would be held with the runner-up, Great Britain.

“Of course I would love for you to be in this country [Inglaterra]but the fact is that they won [Ucrânia] and they deserve to have it and I believe they can have it and I believe they should get it,” Johnson told reporters upon arrival in Britain after a visit to Kiev.

“I think Kiev or any other safe Ukrainian city would be a fantastic place to welcome him,” he added.

“It’s a year away, it’s gonna be alright [a situação na Ucrânia] when the Eurovision Song Contest arrives and I hope the Ukrainians understand.”

Comments by the organizer of the European Broadcasting Union contest on Friday that they had started discussions with the British broadcaster BBC to host the next event in the UK were met with disappointment in Kiev, which demanded further negotiations.
