Ukraine: Chechens say they have captured the town hall of Mariupol

Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov said today that his forces had seized the town hall in Mariupol, which is under siege by the Russian army.

“The men reported by radio that they had liberated the Mariupol administration building and that they had raised our flag,” Kadyrov wrote in the Telegram, claiming that Ukrainian forces had “abandoned their positions”.

According to the French Agency, he added that other Russian units are being sent in parallel to this large port in southeastern Ukraine, which has been destroyed by the bombings. “With the help of Allah, Mariupol will soon be completely cleansed,” he noted.

Ramzan Kadyrov, who has come under fire from international NGOs for serious human rights abuses in Chechnya, announced on March 17 that 1,000 Tescan volunteers were on their way to fight in Ukraine.

He assured on Monday that he was in Ukraine, on the side of the Russian forces, at an airport they have occupied near Kyiv. This information has not been verified by an independent source and has been questioned by Ukrainian officials.
